Acanthus

The relief, decoration and ornament in wood were the inspiration for going to the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. There I stood for hours on gouging and cutting a wooden workbench. I cut a simple ornament, the acanthus, of 10 by 15 cm. I spent a few months doing that. That did not matter because the most inspiring thing for me was to learn to read "the language of relief". Understand the story behind such a gutted leaf from wood. The history of Acanthus, the first organic leaf form, incorporated in architecture, 5th century BC, has put me on a series of works on paper. At WG Kunst in Amsterdam I created a space for the Acanthus.
